The hubs and I love waterfalls and we are trying to visit all the ones we can find in Georgia. It’s a great way to get some exercise, spend some time together and to just give our spirits a chance to recharge. Today we hiked to Blue Hole Falls and High Shoals Falls near Hiwassee and met all three of those objectives.
As we marvelled at the gorgeous water splashing over the rocks and felt the refreshing cool air, a phrase from Scripture rushed to my mind. “And His voice was like the sound of many waters”. When I got home, I pulled out my Bible to see where it’s found and what it’s about. Turns out it shows up in several places. Old and New Testament.
Ezekiel 43:2 - and behold the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east. And His voice was like the sound of many waters, and the earth shone with His glory.
Revelation 1:15 - and His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been caused to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.
More occurrences in Revelation, Ezekiel, Psalms and Jeremiah. At least one of the references is possibly describing the sounds of angels singing but the others are clearly characterizing God or Jesus. As I listened to the sound of the waterfalls, that is Who I thought about. The Glory that we will witness when we come into His presence. Simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying. Breathtaking and satisfying. Beyond description and fulfillment of every desire in our hearts.
Another passage of Scripture comes to mind: Romans 1:19,20 - because that which is known about God is evident within them for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes, His eternal power, and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made so that they are without excuse.
God’s creation is to be enjoyed - certainly that is true. But it is meant for more than that. God’s purpose in His creation is to reveal Himself to us. Next time you see a waterfall, think about His glorious voice, His magnificent power, and His inexpressible glory. Oh what a day that will be when we see Him and hear Him and drink in His glory!
